Extreme Variation in Star Formation Efficiency across a Compact, Starburst Disk Galaxy

چکیده
We report on the internal distribution of star formation efficiency in IRAS 08339+6517 (hereafter IRAS08), using $\sim$200~pc resolution CO(2-1) observations from NOEMA. The molecular gas depletion time changes by 2 orders-of-magnitude disk-like values outer parts to less than 10$^8$~yr inside half-light radius. This translates a per free-fall that also orders-of-magnitude, reaching 50-100\%, different local spiral galaxies and typical assumption constant, low efficiencies. Our target is compact, massive disk galaxy has SFR 10$\times$ above $z=0$ main-sequence; Toomre $Q\approx0.5-0.7$ high velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{mol}\approx 25$~km~s$^{-1}$). find IRAS08 similar other rotating, starburst literature resolved $\Sigma_{SFR}\propto\Sigma_{mol}^N$ relation. Star Cluster Formation in Extreme Starburst Environments
The currently available empirical evidence on the star formation processes in the extreme, high-pressure environments induced by galaxy encounters, mostly based on high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations, strongly suggests that star cluster formation is an important and perhaps even the dominant mode of star formation in the starburst events associated with galaxy interactio...
متن کاملThe Star Formation History of the Disk of the Starburst Galaxy M82
Spectroscopic, photometric and dynamical data of the inner 3 kpc part of the starburst galaxy M82 are analyzed in order to investigate the star formation history of its disk. The long-slit spectra along the major axis are dominated by Balmer absorption lines in the region outside the nuclear starburst all the way up to ≈ 3.5 scalelengths (μB = 22 mag arcsec ). Single Stellar Population (SSP) sp...
متن کاملStar formation efficiency in galaxy clusters
Context. The luminous material in clusters of galaxies exists in two forms: the visible galaxies and the X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium. The hot intra-cluster gas is the major observed baryonic component of clusters, about six times more massive than the stellar component. The mass contained within visible galaxies is approximately 3% of the dynamical mass. Aims. Our aim was to analyze bot...
متن کاملCloud and Star Formation in Disk Galaxy Models with Feedback
We include feedback in global hydrodynamic simulations in order to study the star formation properties, and gas structure and dynamics, in models of galactic disks. In previous work we studied the growth of clouds and spiral substructure due to gravitational instability. We extend thesemodels by implementing feedback in gravitationally bound clouds; momentum (due to massive stars) is injected at...
متن کاملStar Formation in Starburst Galaxies
Some of the basic properties of star formation in starburst galaxies are reviewed. I discuss triggering and termination mechanisms in starbursts and provide estimates of star-formation rates. Galaxies with ongoing star formation at low and high redshift are compared.
